Why Political Science?

Understanding government, both in the United States and internationally, is the single most important thing a person can do to be an informed and engaged citizen. The fact that a degree in political science can lead to a promising career is almost less important than the fact that as a graduate with a political science degree, you will have the knowledge base to ask tough questions of government officials and legislative representatives.

The Department of Political Science emphasizes a number of subfields within the political science discipline. Students can concentrate on American government, public policy, comparative government, political theory, international relations and research methods.

In addition to interning in Washington, D.C., many political science majors choose to take advantage of the perks of living in a capital city. Virginia’s General Assembly is in session during the spring semester and students frequently participate in a six-hour internship that puts them on the floor of the Legislature, working directly with delegates.
