University of Richmond

Planning Your Program

Richmond offers a major in political science. Once students declare the political science major, typically some time during their sophomore year, they are assigned a faculty member who will serve as their advisor and help them develop a program of study to achieve their educational goals.

The political science curriculum emphasizes the study of both American and international governments. Students take courses in American government and research methods before jumping into introductory classes in comparative government, international relations or public policy. In addition, all students take at least one course in political theory and the senior seminar.

Research methods courses, in particular, prepare students to partner with faculty on independent research projects. Other experiential learning opportunities include study abroad and internships.
